April 15, 2011 -- Thurso, Scotland -- 'Expect the unexpected' is a saying that all surfers and spectators at the O'Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland have learnt to embrace at this competition.
But this year the unexpected has come in the form of sunny good weather, light winds and epic Thurso East conditions.
"Thurso is showing us every bit of magic it's got this week," said Australian Dion Atkinson. "It's been amazing. The waves have been unbelievable. We were just getting barreled non-stop. You have to treasure those days, we don't get them too often on this tour."
"We came straight from the comp at Margaret River in Australia all the way to this northern tip of Scotland," said Dion who impressed in the first two rounds but was knocked out of the first heat of Round 3 by Joan Duru and Jay Quinn. "But it has been worth it for these waves we are getting at this event. I'm so glad I came."
Following a lay day yesterday, the 6 Star ASP event kicked off at 8.30am on this sunny Friday morning at Thurso East in a solid 6 foot swell. Contest director Dave Reed finished off Round 1, moved through Round 2 and into the first two heats of Round 3 in another long day of surfing that made the most of the long days in this northern Scottish location.
The next call will be April 16 at 8am for Heat 3 in Round 3.
