A Holla for Colla

My first exposure to Thomas Colla’s work was at his ‘Heartcore’ exhibition in NYC’s Lost Weekend surf/coffee shop.  The pictures were a study in black n’ white with images of thumping NY & NJ line-ups and close-up action shots.  They were striking in their composition, angles and mood and were some of the finer representations of northeast surfing that I’ve seen.  Though they weren’t seasonally based, they spoke of winter and captured the sheer pleasure that winter surfing gives to those in the know.

Rob Kelly Smashes ‘Em in Puerto Rico!

In February, many of the world’s top surfers gathered on the beach at Jobos in Puerto Rico for the 4-Star rated Rip Curl Pro.  This was a big comp for a bunch of reasons.  Heaps of WQS surfers used the contest as a launching pad for their 2013 campaign, eager to get the year off to a good start and grab some early points.  At the same time, a host of WCT surfers used the Pro to get their feet wet again in preparation for the elite tour slated to start in just a month.  The roster was littered with noted names like CJ Hobgood, Taylor Knox, Chris Ward, Gabe Kling, Evan Geiselman, Cody Thompson, Andrew Doheny, Cory Lopez, Nathaniel Curran, Asher Nolan, Dillon Perillo and Ben Bourgeois.  And that’s not even mentioning the local heavyweights like Dylan Graves, Wesley Toth and Brian Toth.  Heats were packed with talent and everyone was in a fightin’ mood.

Think the WCT needs to be tweaked? So does the ASP...

Waves and the Claw!

More 30 knot winds, but more A-frames too!  Who got it on Thursday?

The models showed surf all week, but that wind would just not disappear and was setting up to be the spoiler.  And even on that day, looking at the line-ups from the beach, it looked like the wind was tearing the surf to shreds. Not onshore, but just crazy-ass offshores, which is almost more aggravating.  But...

Fun January Surf!

Who got it on Sunday?  My, oh my, that was fun. With a swell that was literally supposed to pop up and die within hours and winds that were due to howl, the odds were stacked against us for a fun day without sandblasting torture.  Hoping against hope, I checked the beach around 11:00 and found decent waist high waves rolling in and a light wind. I suited up with a few buddies, met up with some old ones in the water and was stoked to find the swell pulsing as predicted over the next 3 hours. Waist high sets became chest with a few errant ones even better. The occasional 30mph gusts were rare and most of the afternoon was blessed with light winds and sunshine.
