The final day of the SCION Jenkinson’s Pro came through with Hurricane surf from a far away storm named Michael. The storm could not have sent swell at a better time. With a week of bad weather mixed with good surf the running options only one day left one day left in the ten day waiting period.
The day started off with the Amateur divisions in which Patrick Orr (Hawaii) came away with his first Amateur title with the 14-18 divisions win. Patrick used smooth airs and rolls to take out the competition. Tanner McDaniel (Kauai) repeated his 2011 win with another 13 and under title at the Scion Jenks Pro/Am. The ever competitive open division was won by an on fire Kahekili Labette. Posting a 9 point ride in the first five minutes put all of the finalists riders on the ropes for the entire heat.
In the Drop Knee division David Hubbard pulled away with an early lead which he held until the horn blew, making him Drop Knee US Champion once again. Sammy Morrentino , David Hubbard’s under study, surfed well but was not able to dismantle his mentors (David Hubbards) game plan and skills.
The Pro men’s heat was all about Jeff Hubbard for the early rounds where he consitantly posted the highest scores of his heats and of the day thus far. However Kahekili Labtte had other plans and posted some major scores with big back flips in the early moments of the heat. With time ticking away Jeff Hubbard , Jacob Romero and Sammy Morretino tirelessly tried to catch Kahekilli but with no avail.
The Maui native took home his first with on the USBA tour and was quoted as saying “ I am humbled by this win and honored”. Furthermore he went on to thank his mom and sponsors for their support of his budding career on the USBA national title tour.
