Little Egg Harbor, NJ. Tuesday, August 7, 2013 - On Saturday, August 3rd, the 5th Annual Jetty Coquina Jam was held in Beach Haven, NJ. The Taylor Ave beach was designated as the contest site, and proved to be the perfect location for this year's event. The purpose of this all-female surf contest is to provide a feel-good community gathering to benefit David's Dream & Believe Cancer Foundation, and the positive vibes were high despite the overcast skies.
Although conditions for the first few heats were less than desirable, the thirty two surfers who competed made the best of what the ocean had to offer. The bracket-style tournament is designed to bridge the gap between generations of surfers through the random pairing of a younger surfer with a more experienced surfer. "This was my first time in the event. I think it's so cool to have so many women of all ages," said Taylor Herman, 15, who competed with Beth Mann, 46, against Selena Moberly, 16 & Brittany Gomulka, 26, in the final round. After these four women surfed a combined total of twenty-four waves in the last heat, Moberly & Gomulka were awarded the Coquina Jam trophy.
Sponsors and surfers can be certain that their participation in the Coquina Jam was a necessary component of the success of the contest. Prior to Saturday, Jetty had donated in excess of $17,000 to the cause. With the conclusion of this year's event, Jetty has been able to increase this amount by over $7,500. All of these funds are donated to David's Dream & Believe Cancer Foundation, who distributes the funds directly to local breast cancer patients in need.
