On January 5, 2013, Freezin For A Reason: a 5.7 mile paddleboard/ sup race and 2.5 mile Recreation paddle around Ventnor Heights and Chelsea Heights in Ventnor, NJ took place with a total of 127 people who paddled in the event. They didn’t call this event "Freezin for a Reason" for nothing…the air was 40° and the water was a blistering 38 °!
Some participants flew in from California, Arizona, and a few even attended as far North as Cape Cod down to Virginia Beach. The race went down out of Viking Rowing Club on Surrey and Calvert Ave in Ventnor, NJ
Organizer of the event Sean Duffy explained to us that “The reason why I held the race was because I thought that it was a great way to help those that were still struggling. I know its gonna take a long time to recover for a lot of people and waves for water has been to work in the surf communities since day one. The race showed a real sense of community on race day. The other reason why I wanted to run this event was to show people that the Atlantic City Area is not destroyed like the national news showed. The part of the boardwalk that was destroyed was already falling apart and AC is open for business. My Dad is a Jitney Driver and the city has been quiet since the storm.”
Overall, so far this great effort raised a little over $10,000 in waves for water in a couple hours between the race, the after party at Tomatoes Restaurant in Margate, and all the Raffles, and Auction. Some epic gear was auctioned off, including a DCal surfboard shaped by Dan Callaghan of Galloway that had a collage of pictures from sandy on the bottom of it. The board went for $800.
All of the proceeds of the event went to Waves 4 Water's Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund. You can still donate here: Freezin For a Reason (5.7 mile Paddleboard Race for Sandy Victims)
