Stop No. 9 on the Samsung Galaxy World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) came to a thrilling conclusion today and also saw Tyler Wright (AUS), 22, claim the 2016 WSL Women’s Title, after her closest rival Courtney Conlogue (USA), 24, was eliminated in the Semifinals.
An elite tour competitor since 2011, Wright’s clinching of her maiden world surfing crown today comes after an emotional year with her family and four elite Championship Tour wins this season.
“A lot has gone into this, a lot of hours and a lot of moments,” said Wright. “There are a lot of reasons why I set out the win this World Title this year and a lot of reasons that I did not mention to the public. Last year was such a hectic year -- I lost an uncle and this was the last event that he ever saw me compete in. A lot of emotional moments, but pretty much from that moment I promised him that I would win a World Title and I did. It’s in his honor and my brother’s honor and my whole entire family and the community I come from. So many things happened this year and my personal life hasn’t been easy. Owen and my family and my mom -- I just love them so much and to be able to do it for them is very special.”
“I’ve always known I could do this and this year I was ready,” continued Wright. “A massive congrats to Courtney (Conlogue). I’ve been in her position twice now and I know what it’s like. I love her, I love the way she competes and she’s such a strong competitor. A big thank you to everyone that’s come before me and paved the way. Carissa (Moore) is a huge inspiration -- she’s the progressor of this sport so to be in final with her was really special. Thank you to her!”
The win today for three-time WSL Champion Moore is her first ever CT victory in France and her first of the 2016 season. Moore remains in third place on the Jeep Leaderboard heading into the final event of the year in Maui.
As winter came to a close, many expected the weekly swells to come to an end. Thankfully, Friday provided fun overhead waves to those who knew where to look. As temps continue to rise, the need for a 5 mil wetsuit has passed. Let's keep our fingers crossed that the wave streak will continue through the Spring!
Pushfins began with a simple design goal: to make high quality, performance surfboard fins that have a minimal impact on the environment.
As raw materials exponentially raise the environmental impact of consumer products, we chose to source as much material as possible from post-consumer and industry waste channels. The primary materials in our fins are used/manufacture defect skateboard decks (seven plies of Rock Maple, one of the top five sustainably harvested hard woods in the world), fiberglass scraps from the surfboard shaping/glassing industry and Entropy’s bio-based resin. The only raw material that goes into our fins is a percentage of the resin and the stainless steel pins in our slider box fins, which means that over 90% of the material in each and every fin would have otherwise been headed for the landfill.
In 1970, John Dahl recognized the need for a performance-oriented ski wax and quickly formulated his first ski wax and created U.S. Ski Wax Co. A year later he founded Wax Research, Inc. and Sticky Bumps Surf Wax was born.
At that time, the sport of surfing was in the midst of the radical Shortboard Revolution and the demands on boards and wax was progressing at an accelerated rate. John's goal was to make wax that would help elevate surfing to the next level.
Wax Research’s offerings have been in a perpetual state of evolution. From the emergence of the thruster through the New School generation and into the 21st Century, John has been on an endless mission to improve the worlds surf experiences by enhancing wax performance. Today Wax Research ships over four million Sticky Bumps wax bars annually. This fact alone translates to hundreds of millions of waves ridden with their signature wax every year.
As we continue to receive epic swells every week, this one was nastier than most when it comes to weather. Wednesday brought rain, minor flooding, thunderstorms, 50 mph+ winds and even tornadoes further inland. As frothing surfers from up & down New Jersey showed up for the typical dawn patrol, it wasn't what most expected. Some were even scratching their heads and saying, "I skipped work for this?" Around lunch time the wind went off shore and cleaned up, leaving perfect waves to those who waited. Who knows what Mother Nature will throw at us next!
As the water temperature continues to drop, the epic run of swell still brings out those craving some frosty tube time. Thankfully we were given three days of fun waves and more is on the way. Life is good!
Winter Storm Jonas reminded us just how powerful Mother Nature is. The East Coast's first storm of the season delivered over a foot of snow, flooding, 50 mph+ winds and wave heights maxing out the East Coast norm. This swell truly separated the men from the boys. Let's be honest... it doesn't get much better than this!
We’re just like you. We love to play in the sun. The bad news is, one in five of us will get skin cancer due to sun exposure. One in five. That’s more than all other cancers combined. The good news is, Sun Bum can reduce the risk by 80% simply by regularly using approved sun care products.
In 2010 they created a new high quality lifestyle brand of sun care products specifically formulated for people who live and love in the sun. A brand that captures the essence of the outdoor lifestyle while protecting ourselves, and the ones we love, from the harmful dangers of the sun. They’re not a giant disconnected corporation. They’re a small company in Cocoa Beach, Florida that makes a serious sunscreen they entrust to protect their very own kids, spouses, and friends.
Sun Bum Sunscreens are also tested, approved and recommended by The Skin Cancer Foundation. The SCF is internationally recognized as the educational leader to the public and medical communities related to skin cancer prevention. The SCF does not approve or lend its seal of approval to products that do not meet their very stringent standards.
So the next time you’re out in the sun, protect your lazy ass and grow old with us.
