Coolangatta, NSW, Australia- Snapper Rocks provided unpredictable conditions for Australia’s Stephanie Gilmore as the hometown heroine claimed her first victory in the season-opening event on the Gold Coast. In a strong final finish against South Africa’s Bianca Buitendag, Gilmore used her local knowledge to push herself into the number one spot on the WCT. This is Gilmore’s first win on tour since she claimed her fifth world title in 2012 with a win in Biarritz, France. After posting a strong 8.80 midway through the half-hour final it was clear that Steph Gilmore was in control and ended the heat with a two-wave score of 15.80.
Monday’s final win was a great start for the veteran who beat defending world champ Carissa Moore in the semi-finals. Buitendag, the 2013 women’s tour rookie of the year, was on a roll after eliminating Santa Barbara’s Lakey Peterson in the semi’s.
Next stop on tour, the Margaret River Classic in West Australia which will run on April 2nd.
