If you missed it the first time around, here’s you chance to catch up on some East Coast surfing film history. ‘A Pleasant Surprise’ was filmed back in the mid-2000s, and after its run of playing at theatres and being released on DVD it’s back again.
Now on YouTube for everyone to watch for free, it features the old school of New Jersey surfing, with Sam Hammer, Ben McBrien, Andrew Gesler, Zach Humphries, Jamie Moran, Randal Townsend, Brendan Willem, Chris Kelly, Rob Kelly, Matt Keenan, and Ian Bloch, to name just a few!
Here’s what the film creators had to say about this re-run of their classic Easy Coast surf movie…
A Pleasant Surprise is a feature length east coast surf film featuring a select group professional and amateur east coast surfers. Three years in the making, this surf film documents a world of contrast as daily changes in weather and waves prove to be all part of a larger picture; thumping beach breaks, cold water, and quick tropical storms are just a fraction of what you will find. Brought to you in Super 16mm, A Pleasant Surprise allows for the full beauty of the mid-atlantic region and its surfers to be realized.
A Pleasant Surprise premiered to sold out crowds in 2008 at the Paramount Theater in Asbury Park, New Jersey and as part of the New York Surf Film Festival in Tribeca, New York. Eleven years later, and long after a limited run of DVDs had sold out, the films creators are excited to finally make the film available online for a world wide audience.
